Would appreciate your comments regarding these new traffic lights - TopicsExpress

Would appreciate your comments regarding these new traffic lights that have just become operational in the last 24 hours on the main A61 into north Sheffield. This was once a very busy roundabout that our highways department thought could be improved by turning into a signal controlled crossroads. However, something interesting regarding these lights is now catching a number of motorists in a bit of a quandary. The approach road is a two lane dual carriageway that splits into 3 lanes approaching the traffic lights A and B, nearside lane marked ahead or left turn, centre lane marked ahead only, and outside lane marked right turn only. Set of lights A has a solid green and a left turn filter, set B has only a solid green (i.e. no right turn filter). Across the other side of the junction are traffic lights C. These are two sets of lights, one showing a solid green and a left turn filter arrow, the right hand set shows a right turn filter arrow. However, it has been noted that approaching this junction, motorists see a solid green on set B and are crossing the one and only stop line before the puffin crossing. On entering the junction they then are seeing a red stop light on set C preventing them from turning right. Dilemma, should they cross the stop line at set B if there is a red showing on set C. Watching today, numerous drivers didnt have clue and were ending up in no-mans land. Discussing with another ADI, I suggested seeing as there was a red for those turning right, it would be prudent to stop at set B, regardless of whether the green was showing at B.
