Would there be extra crime on our island with a fixed link? It - TopicsExpress

Would there be extra crime on our island with a fixed link? It appears so far in this FL debate that some are fearful of a crime wave that will eternally engulf our island should there be a fixed link? Apparently the very same mainland dwellers that travel to the island by ferry at the moment, will turn into evil blood sucking zombies set about on murder and pillage....because they have travelled here by alternative means. Perhaps the ferry companies throughout the years have been administering additives to purchased on board coffees and teas that calm mainlanders before they disembarked in order to save us all from such horror! 😃 Seriously though, lets look at the facts. Any prospective villain may need to think again if he/she/they decide to use a fixed link to gain access and leave from our island. Automatic number plate recognition systems (ANPR). Used extensively on continental toll roads... Any vehicle driven on and off the island will have the EXACT date and time recorded onto a data base. Along with this information will be high definition video footage of the vehicle, driver and front seat passenger as the toll is paid at the automated booth. This information will be linked to a national DVLC data base. If a vehicle has been stolen or reported to be implicated in crime, immediate alerts will be sent to the police and the driver can be intercepted. The technology is here. If a big smash, grab and run crime is committed such as the one dealt on Benzies in Cowes a few years ago, the FL can closed immediately and be monitored for suspicious characters/vehicles while still allowing checked vehicles to pass through with minimal inconvenience. With ferries, no-one at all can travel as the whole vessel gets stopped. People miss appointments, work, flights etc while checks are made. In this particular scenario the link replaces the Hovercraft, the fast jet and the Fisbbourne car ferry. The required authority to make the checks would be condensed into one small escape area thus making the criminals exit much less likely. If I were of that ilk and planning a crime spree on the island I think Id use the ferry. These 21st century safe guards are not in place on the ferries and would be very difficult to administer if attempted. If a link was built and then serviced with this technology, we believe crime rates involving people from the mainland....... would fall. Because of this technology and our one road in and out, we believe the Isle of Wight will be one of the SAFEST and secure places in Britain to live. 👍 😃
