Wow. Am , like most things, pretty much a late comer to TV shows, and sitting up with random channel on, and it is the Ali G show in USA which also has clips of Borat and Bruno. For any who do not know, the wind up is the guy plays each of these characters and conducts what his guests think are REAL interviews with a serious (but very foreign) journalist, Ali G being a black Brit , Borat being Kazak, and Bruno being a gay Austrian. But Borat was in Mississippi at a wine club with old White guys, rather very old, and made a comment about blacks being slaves and they corrected him and told him slavery was all gone and , quote...well, it is a good thing.. All well and dandy , right? Like two seconds later the older White dude adds well, good for them at least, not so good for us.... ALMOST, but not quite, under his breath. DUDE! I mean , wow, puts race relations in Mississippi into context maybe when the old guys, old enough to be young men in the whole civil rights sixties, all but admit they have mixed feelings about the passing of slavery! About the only thing that could have made that exchange more awkward would have been saying something like well I like blacks, everyone should own one or something similarly wicked! The fun of watching the guy who does these characters is the reaction of his victims.. Often they are overly polite, especially the Brits, and probably go away privately thinking he is an idiot (before being let in on the joke, if they ever are). Now and again, however, they presume he is so foreign that the significance of what they say will be lost on him, and they speak their souls, and it is often as hilarious, if disturbingly revealing. This was one of those times.
