Wow! I think I just had an epiphany. I keep hearing people say “now you know how the private sector feels” in regards to them taking away all of the insurance benefits they promised our police and fire retirees and also taking away the pensions of current and new officers. I just got it! Police and Firemen are no longer seen as the people out there risking their lives for the citizens. We are just another profession that provides a service. These retirees that sacrificed their lives and their bodies so many times get no credit for all that they have done. After now knowing this, I can’t help but wonder why anyone would come do this job anymore. Let’s see, I think I will compare police to the average private sector job. 1. Running towards gunfire vs. running away from it. 2. See innocent children lying dead in front of you after being murdered vs. hearing about it on the news. 3. Getting spit on, bit, kicked, and punched by someone who, if they are able, may take your gun away and kill you with it vs. banging your knee on the desk in your office. 4. Seeing your partners laying their dead, shot, or badly beaten vs. seeing a coworker get a paper cut. 5. Trying to eat a quick bite in your squad or eating at a restaurant and people constantly telling you about their problems vs. a quiet lunch with friends, family, or coworkers. 6. NEVER being off work (because you are required by your oath to protect the public at all times) vs. getting off work and enjoying your family time. I’m not seeing any reasons for someone to come do this job. Someone in the private sector, please help me. Before you start, don’t tell me “this is what they signed up to do” because it is not. They signed up to get a decent “pension” with good healthcare.
