Wow, already into Week 2 here at Clamber Club! This week, Froggies are learning about the concept of time, and day and night. Leapfrogs, are going to be flying away, learning about Aeroplanes. THE CONCEPT OF TIME This could include: •Understanding day and night, sunrise and sunset •Understanding what happens next in the sequence of the day. •Becoming aware of yesterday, today and tomorrow. •The days of the week, months of the year, seasons, and seasonal events. •Growth and change - when you were a little baby you looked like this, and now you have grown. •Time it takes to get somewhere - short or long time •Rhythm and music •Time on a clock! IDEAS FOR HOME •Observe with your child the differences between day and night. •Talk about the things you do at night and the things you do in the day. •Watch the sunrise (easy!) and the sunset. •Reinforce his understanding of day and night by looking at books and magazines which represent these themes. •Use whatever words he understands - `sleep time’, or `time to wake up’ •Make a picture or photo album showing the events of your child’s day in sequence. Talk about the events at the end of each day. •Make pictures at each season change - observe the changes around you. Collect leaves in autumn, flowers in spring. •Look at a clock and listen to it tick, an egg timer, look at shadows changing throughout the day. Up and down – aeroplanes!!! The concept of up and down can be easily understood if your child practices the actions on a physical level before learning them on a 3 dimensional or 2 dimensional level. Sometimes it is easier to understand a concept when we learn to understand it through: our bodies first, then on a 3D level, and then on a 2D level. Grade the concept like this: (many other concepts you want to teach your child can be taught in this way as well) Start with the body: lets move our bodies up and down. Once your child understands this concept, move to the 3D level: lets lift the teddy/ toy up and down. Or… put the block up and take that one down. When your child can do this, you can grade the game to board game play moving pieces up and down and then move to the 2D level of drawing a line down and up.
