Wow, its amazing that such points of view still exist, especially in the art world! Not wanting to stoop to his depths and pigeonholing him as a typical egotistical chauvinistic male, my argument would take a different stance. A male artist is an artist. A large number of female artists play many roles, wives, mothers, extra employment to support their family/art and they have to fight against other chauvinistic views while trying to be taken seriously. For many women artists its a juggling act. For the majority of male artists it has been totally about them focusing on their art, how often have you heard about any of the great masters downing brushes to look after their offspring or put the dinner on? And as for the measure of how much an artist sells for, since when has art been just about the money, beauty is after all in the eye of the beholder... I wish I had the luxury of shutting myself away for days/months on end in the name of creation and art but Im a woman, I juggle, I realise that my own ambitious needs are not the be all and end all in life, its not that I cant paint as well (which is an arguable point) as a man, its that Im just not that selfish. independent.co.uk/arts-entertainment/art/news/whats-the-biggest-problem-with-women-artists-none-of-them-can-actually-paint-says-georg-baselitz-8484019.html
