Wow, my first enjoyable drive back home from Grand Forks in ages. How? I stayed off the freeway. That straight as an arrow and flat 75 mile drive is always the most boring trip, highlighted with occasional periods of stress, associated with large trucks and bad drivers. So for the heck of it I drove old US 81, which parallels I-29 all the way and made it to the house avoiding the freeway all the way. The half hour extra time was well worth it, especially on such a beautiful summer evening with all the crops in bloom. Its hard to really see and truly get a feel for this bountiful land we call the Red River Valley while zooming down the freeway. Good tunes on the radio always make a road trip in the countryside so much better with some great classic country music in the background. Ive always liked 600 AM, KSJB out of Jamestown as a guarantee for that. Theres always something comforting about hearing occasional livestock and crop reports, too.
