Write for ELLE: Tip #1 by Colin Cheong, author of award-winning novels, "The Stolen Child" and "Tangerine". A story needs Three Components: - Orientation (background information) - Complication (the problem) - Resolution (the solution) Of the three, the complication is essential. No problem, no story. Short stories tend to have the space for the development of only one central complication. The story also tends to start near the beginning of the problem. There are basically three plots that cover most of all the stories ever told or written: Boy Meets Girl, The Clever Tailor (about someone quite ordinary who overcomes problems through wit) and The Man Who Learned Better (think of the boy who cried wolf). Some stories are driven by plot: The story is interesting mainly because of the events and you are eager, as the reader, to find out what happens next. Closely linked to plot is theme - the broader idea behind the plot. A plot or storyline might be Boy Meets Girl, but its theme could be love, betrayal, consideration, evil, materialism, whatever you want. The plot helps to bring out this larger theme.
