Writing fiction? Help is at hand with FREE writer development workshops in Leeds Thinking about writing a novel but don’t know where to start? Need help developing the storyline of your book but have lost the plot? Perhaps you’ve finished writing and are dreading the edits... Join Katy Massey in a series of free writing development workshops, taking place between December and February in Leeds at The Compton Centre. Katy Masseys novel, The Book of Ghosts, was shortlisted in the 2012 SI Leeds Literary Prize. A former journalist, she has a PhD in Creative Writing from Newcastle University and is an experienced writing tutor and editor. Her current work, Tangled Roots, is concerned with capturing the experience of interracial families. Her workshops look at these three crucial stages in the writing process: Beginning fiction Saturday 7 December 2013, 11am - 3pm In this first session youll become confident to start writing fiction. Well examine choosing a plot, finding characters and look at different types of writing for different readers. Well also look at sources of inspiration and the decisions you should make before you start writing your book, so you avoid time-wasting mistakes. Building your story Saturday 4 January 2014, 11am - 3pm In this second meeting, we will look at the building blocks of storytelling; particularly the importance of compelling characterisation, using action and building tension. By the end of this session, you will have learned how to stop your novel petering out in the middle, and how to drive your story to a fantastic climax. Finishing your story Saturday 1 February 2014, 11am - 3pm In this third and final session you will find out why authors say ‘writing is re-writing’! We will look at examples of first and second drafts, how to improve our writing, and how to draw attention to your novel when you are ready to publish it. We will look at the feasibility of self-publishing, and using blogging and social media to get your work noticed.
