Writing for Fun. Short, Short Story 1 The Woodsman. He was running full speed through the leaf-littered woods without making a sound. Each step was careful and precise even as he ran. He knew the layout of the land and could have run through these trees blindfolded. As he ran, he listened. The voices behind him grew fainter until he couldnt hear them anymore. Then he stopped for just a moment to jam the handle of a well polished knife he took from his pursuers into the ground, leaving the blade pointing towards the sky. He had already shown that he was willing to defend his forest. He had the advantage because the forest was his home. The enraged men chased after their target, going deeper and deeper into the woods. Then, they saw the knife. One stooped down and picked it up to examine it. He and his companions all knew it belonged to their fallen friend. The man shook his head and dropped the knife then stood up and looked around. Jerry must have got a hit in on him. He cant be too far from here. They fanned out and started looking around. All the trees looked the same. They were never going to find him. Where could he be? One man could feel his heart beating in his chest as he stepped over the leaf covered roots of a tree to his side. Just as he passed by, a figure at the base of the tree slowly rose to its feet. The man felt hands go around his mouth and he tried to cry out for help, but his voice was muffled and the world began to go dark. Twenty minutes later, a cry of terror was heard and the rest of the party rushed to the sound to find a man standing with his mouth gaping open, looking up at their companion. He was hanging from a tree limb by a rope tied around his ankles. He was tied up from his neck to his knees and his mouth was gagged. His cellphone was wedged between the ropes with a message on it which read, LEAVE while you still can. The men freed their companion who explained that he never saw it coming and suggested that they leave the forest as soon as they could. The terrified group breathed a sigh of relief when they left the forest behind them, though the whole time they swore they felt eyes watching them. Truck doors slammed and the band drove away quickly. From his vantage point, the Woodsman shook his head slowly, knowing theyd be back. . .
