Written by co Kerry songwriter Sean McCarthy, Step it out Mary is apparently based on an older childrens skipping song (hows that for morbid?) The song has been covered and passed around with some frequency in the past few decades, which makes me feel less guilty about cutting a few repeated lines out of the chorus. I am generally interested in how this largely contemporary trad song participates with the antique genre tradition of society forces woman to die for love rather than marry for money. While Charlene and I once discussed how this song lived in conversation with Romeo and Juliet, the British folk ballad cannon is rife with this motif.
