Wrote some prose last night, inspired by a couple of mispronunciations... “On Verginers and Draws” ~ by P. Young (Dedicated to Esra and Julie) “I have a verginer and you don’t!” she said, sounding southern and laughing as she chased the fly through the garden. It was a pretty day, and Julie’s eyes flashed as bright as her smile. Miss Esra, black hair tied up in a thick soft braid, stopped and asked: “Why are you chasing it? Why are you chasing that butterfly? It’s a butter FLY…. It’s meant to fly away. And anyway, I do too have one! Silly Julie.” They played. They played under that June sun, laughing as children laugh, laughing the frolicky sort of laughter that girls share when they are imagining – imagining being Queen, or Pope, or a BIG walrus, or even being a grown up lady. Holding hands, they began to spin, and spin, and turn and turn and one day they were not so little anymore and found out that being queen and pope and even a walrus was a lot more fun than being a grown up girl. Verginers sometimes get in the way – because the road signs that say “THIS WAY TO THE HEART” somehow always run through the tunnel that says “VERGINER AHEAD.” The pretty butterfly wings we hid inside old maple bureaus, along with skate keys and bottle caps, the dreams we hoped we might someday find again – all of it – pride, innocence, long lingering glances, the taste of cotton candy – all those things, well, drawers sometimes cannot be opened again once shut tight. And all that’s left is to draw out what we remember – draw it out in words, in crayons, in soft shoe dances – furtive little steps that lead us around in a sweet circle. Draws, drawls, drawers…. Cannot open them anymore. Being a big girl, owning a verginer, becoming Queen - well, it’s not always everything it’s cracked up to be. But then again, it aint so bad either. Back to the garden, Back to the garden. Closing my eyes, I can see them laughing, watch them spinning. Back to the garden. Won’t you come with me?
