YANKEE STADIUM,9/18/1946- Joe Louis fought THE BRONX BARKEEPER Stefano Tami Mauriello on this date in YANKEE STADIUM and knocked him out in round one. Joe had been floored by a right hand from Mauriello at the beginning of the round, making the same mistake he had made years earlier with THE BLACK ULAN,Max Schmeling. Louis had the tendency to drop his left hand when he stalked his opponent, leaving him open for a right lead. The fact that is probably least known is that they fought on second base in RUTHS HOUSE. Under that base was constructed an hydraulic lift at the time the stadium was built. Jacob Ruppert ,the owner of the team and Cap Houston, an engineer, had decided to cash in on the popular sporting event and place the lift under the base, allowing a ring to be constructed underground and later raised into position. All that was needed was to remove the dirt over second base, open a steel door and raise the ring into the arena!
