YEEHAW! The war cry of the Confederate soldiers was known as the “Rebel Yell.” Fueled by the fear of facing death, the eerie, high-pitched howl likely originated with the screams made by Scottish Highlanders when they made a charge during battle. Early 20th-century writers and filmmakers portrayed the yell simply as “yeehaw” or “yahoo.” Here’s a great bit of historical footage from the 1930s showing aged Rebel soldiers take turns rehearsing their rallying cry.
