YES!! And its okay if you dont know the answer to his final question. The important thing is to be brave enough to ask the question and, whether you know the answer or not, just admit it. Were all stupid for making race what it is. But we do. And we have. Its imbedded in this nation because of the past. its not that most people want it to continue, but most people dont want to bother to unravel it because they think that 1) Its not their fault, so its not their prolem and 2) if you just ignore it long enough, it will go away. It wont. We created it, we have to unravel it. Its not enough to say, Well, Im not racist, so its not a problem as far as Im concerned and I wish everyone would just shut up about it. You may not be a rapist either, but that fact doesnt mean that rape is going to just go away... or that someone couldnt rape your daughter. I wished more white and black people understood that racism is like that too. Its everyones problem, even if youre not racist and even if youre not a minority. If you value liberty and fairness, its your problem and you need to be sorting through it.... having the tough conversations... trying to understand the other side... who you are, who they are, how we got to this point, and how we untangle this centuries old ball of twine weve created out of thin air.
