Howls of thanks to the dedicated few who have stepped up, but we MUST do better. Apathy is toxic. There are less than 85 Mexican wolves in the wild! PLEASE COMMENT TODAY AND SHARE WIDELY! Labeling Canis lupus baileyi as “nonessential” is a disservice to the species, to the USFWS, and to various breeding program participants whose efforts have contributed to Mexican wolves’ reintroduction to the wild for the last fifteen years. I am very concerned that the proposed changes regarding Mexican wolves make it far too easy for them to be killed. The provisions for “taking” a wolf should be much more difficult, not easier. Non-lethal measures to reduce livestock conflicts MUST be taken to ensure their survival in the wild. USFWS should eliminate boundaries to the wolves’ movement. I support the proposal to expand the area where direct releases of Mexican wolves can occur, which is the one critical change included in the proposed rule. However, the draft proposed rule prevents wolves returning to northern New Mexico, southern Colorado, or to the Grand Canyon region, including northern Arizona and southern Utah. There is suitable habitat in these areas that would greatly benefit from having predators on its wild landscape Time is running out for Mexican gray wolves. We need a complete and comprehensive Federal recovery plan immediately! Please FULLY restore these magnificent creatures to their rightful and historic place in our wild landscape once and for all.
