YOUR WEEKLY YANKEES UPDATE PRESENTED BY MITCHELL: THE WEEKEND AHEAD: The Yanks embark upon a 7 game homestand versus A.L. Central leader Detroit and the disappointing L.A. Angels of Anaheim. The outlook still looks dreary even with the Halos on the horizon, because the Pinstripes were just swept by the rebuilding Chicago White Sox… and Mo blew a save… and Petitte was horrible again… and A-Rod’s back in full distraction mode. Well, at least Austin Romine has adjusted to major league pitching. What of newcomer Alfonso Soriano? Oh, he’s flashed the infectious smiles, made some nice plays in left and gotten a pop or two. Yet, we are still amazed that he watches virtually every fly ball he hits. With total bases at a premium for the Yankees, that’s not good. Also in the “OUCH” department is Derek Jeter’s latest trip to the D.L. and the different daily lineups skipper Joe Girardi is putting out there. Finding time for Vernon Wells at the expense of Ichiro is baffling, since Suzuki hits southpaws. Plus, the man goes full blast. No quit in him whatsoever. How do they matchup with Detroit? How does anyone matchup with a team that has Miggy Cabrera AND Prince Fielder in their lineup? Oh, they are missing Perralta at short because HE took his PED suspension from MLB? No big whoop… they procured Iglesias from the Red Sox and he should keep them stable at the slot---if not better, at least, defensively. Tiger pitching? Scherzer has replaced Verlander as the ace of the starting rotation. The bullpen is the weak spot but they are cobbling something together that should suffice. Coming Next Week: The Angels… without Pujols… but still with enough firepower to take the Bronx. Pitching issues abound for L.A…. along with rumors of where their manager-Mike Scioscia- will be next season. QUESTIONS OF THE WEEK: On the outside looking in at a possible Wild Card playoff berth, Do the Yanks need more than a Tigers’-like 12 game winning streak to get back in the thick of things?... Will the Yankees hit double-digits in the number of players who have played at least an inning at 3rd base this season?
