YOUR WELLNESS E-TIP Change Is in the Air What would you like to change about your health or habits if you could? Quit smoking? Eat healthier, maybe lose some extra weight? Start a workout routine? No matter what you want to change, it helps to understand the “stages of change.” Scientists decided to see how people make lasting changes. They found a pattern. It turns out most types of change go through 6 steps or stages: Not changing. You haven’t even thought about making a change. You resist any attempts to change if others suggest it. Thinking about change. You’ve thought about change, but you’re not sure how to take the first step. Getting ready for change. You’re past the first step. You are ready to make a change. You might need to turn to someone for advice or support. Changing. Change is underway. It’s new and exciting. Don’t be afraid to let your friends and family support you. Reward yourself for the hard work you’ve put in so far. Keeping up the change. The change is not feeling new and exciting any more. You might be tempted to stop trying to maintain it. But this is when you have to try your hardest to stick with it. Remember: It won’t be this hard forever. Keep up the good work and you will move beyond this phase. You changed. Congratulations! The change you worked so hard for is now a part of your life. Sometimes it takes a while to get to this point. But once you do, you’ll realize the hard work was worth it.
