YUP...AS ALWAYS ...THE WHITE HOUSE TARGETS YOUR CHILDREN. DALLAS, December 3rd, 2013 – Late Monday, the White House launched a social media initiative called “White House Youth“. A tweet from the official Twitter account requested young Americans join administration communication advisers and community organizers for a Google Hangout Q/A discussion on the healthcare law. The # WHYouth online gather was designed to gather questions for the main event: a Youth Summit also launching on Google Plus Wednesday, December 4th. The Internet was amused, drawing comparisons to between the # WHYouth program and Adolf Hitler’s “Hitler Youth” recruiting posters and old Soviet propaganda outreach programs. Twitter erupted with memes and disparaging retweets. Mocking # WHYouth The launch of an initiative aimed at convincing young Americans Obamacare is beneficial surprises few. The disastrous Healthcare.gov roll out further jaded already disgruntled young voters between the ages of 18-29. As recent polls indicate, President Obama’s support among his base voters between the ages of 18-25 continues to decline. National surveys from Pew, Quinnipiac and Fox News indicate that millennials (previously Obama’s most enthusiastic supporters) are increasingly unhappy with the President’s administration on a range of issues, especially healthcare. Voters in these brackets give Obama’s administration poor marks on the economy 37%-60%, the budget 34%/59%, immigration 39%/49%, and foreign policy 34%/53%. On matters of healthcare 40%/56% are unhappy with Obamacare’s results and the majority feel mislead and hostile toward its implementation. The majority feel betrayed by Obama’s healthcare promises, which makes a “youth initiative” almost necessary. If recent surveys are any indication, the majority desire scrapping the confusing law and its individual mandate entirely and approaching healthcare reform anew. Only 12% polled support keeping the law. These negative trends can also be linked to sticker shock over healthcare prices. Despite lofty promises to contrary, an average 27 year-old male will pay 235% more for health insurance under the Act. In some states, the young would pay 600% more, or roughly $335 more per month. It seems that as implementation has proceeded, young Americans have discovered the program was designed to force them to buy substandard, exorbitantly expensive coverage they may not want or use. This is a serious issue for Obamacare’s advocates. In order for the healthcare program to survive, 2.7 million young, healthy consumers must enroll to pay for older participants. Only a fraction have expressed interests, indicating the advertising campaigns targeting America’s youth haven’t produced must support. Much is riding on Wednesday’s summit. If the administration’s officials cannot persuade millennials of the law’s merits, the Internet may just continue mocking the “youth initiative”, further damaging Obamacare’s viability in the process.
