Years ago when we were little, my sister came up to my mother and announced that she had decided what she wanted to be when she grew up. Independent:, she said. She didnt quite know the meaning of the word but had heard it being tossed around often and thought it was a vocation. Although amused, we were also saddened by the fact that she would never get to be that, being a Downs Syndrome child. Yesterday, she earned the first salary of her life, working as receptionist in my husbands new clinic. The look of joy in her eyes said it all. Never realised how much this would mean for her. Today, my sister, in a small way, is Independent!! Makes me very proud.
