Years before I ever made a composition of my own, Years before I ever dreamed I would have the honor of sharing a stage with, being in the studio with, learning from, or even being around these 2 phenomenal artists Ustad Zakir Hussain and the late great Ustad Sultan Khan ....I studied their work. I must have watched this video a hundred times when I was a kid (before youtube)......This was school for me...THis video and others like it remain the base of my learning about Indian classical music...Growing up on Long Island the only way to get a glimpse of this world was cassette, video tape and then CD and the occasional concert......Because we didnt have the ability or access to so many thousands of videos available online now....we had to do with what we had....I had 5 concert videos that I watched over and over again...In fact when I watch them now...I see why I play the way I do....I could recite these shows verbatim , because of the shear amount of time I spent listening to them over and over again......Its how I learned how to make music.... For anyone with aspirations in music.....my advice is ...no matter what else you are doing..... Pick 5 of the most inspiring concerts, songs, pieces, performances etc that you can find.....and then study them .....watch them and listen a thousand times till you know every lick, every note and every refrain..... Do this for many years till you know these pieces like you know yourself... Then ...start making your own music........
