Yeelen (1987) Director- Souleymane Cissé Country- Mali/Burkina Faso/France /West Germany Yeelen met with a tremendous critical acclaim after it released with a Jury Prize in Cannes and British Film Institutes award for the most original film known as the Sutherland Trophy. Yeelens story is set in the 13th century Mali empire where a young warrior is threatened with the death by his evil sorcerer father and goes on a journey where he learns the power of magic the structure of the film is based on the narrative on the quest of magic, knowlegde and precognition which also involves a societal look in those eras. Yeelen is often considered among one of the top art house african films ever made boasts of superb camerawork where the use of landscapes are exquisitely smashing and the filmmakers (Souleymane Cisses) most recognisible work in the International Film Fraternity.
