*Yell-Free Year Challenge Daily Tip* Creating a positive family culture is key to building happy, healthy families. Positive, loving, supportive, healthy families dont just happen; they take a lot of intentionality. Today, we continue our series on creating a positive family culture. Tip #5 Teaching Tool Your family mission statement is now a positive teaching tool. Remember, your mission statement has been agreed upon by all members of your family already. If your child does something not in line with the values listed in your family mission statement, you can refer back to your statement and explain how his or her actions are not in line with your familys values. Heres an example: Your 9 year old lies to you. You find out about the lie, but rather than yelling and ranting about the lie, you confidently and calmly say, Honesty is a family value that we will not compromise. I am disappointed that you strayed from this value and chose to lie to me. Please tell me why honesty is important and why we chose that as one of our core values. When you discuss agreed-upon values rather than attacking character, you dont shut down lines of communication. If you feel a consequence is necessary for the lie, an appropriate consequence may be to have the child write the family mission statement over again and give an oral report to the family on why honesty is an important value to have. Discuss being courageous enough to be honest even when its hard, and tell your child about a time when you found it hard to be honest. Finally, let your child know you expect honesty from now on and believe fully in his or ability to uphold this important value.
