Yella OK…English Yaakey? (All OK…Why English?) English is - TopicsExpress

Yella OK…English Yaakey? (All OK…Why English?) English is very much the language of communication internationally and even nationally. A person who lacks a proper knowledge of English can be at a certain disadvantage in today’s media-centric world. “Rocking Star” Yash is a famous actor in Kannada films. In fact, he is being touted as the upcoming Superstar in Kannada. Recently, I saw an interview of Yash on television where the interviewer was talking in English and Yash was responding in English. Watching the interview, I got to know Yash lacks English speaking skills. That he was so serious about his English made the interview quite funny and hilarious :) Likewise, B Jayashree is a doyenne of Kannada folk theatre. She is a person with a huge reputation not only as a theatre person but also as a playback singer for films. I’ve worked with her group on a few plays. I once saw her in a shoot for a TV interview where she was talking in English. Soon enough, everybody around understood that B Jayashree isn’t conversant in English. In fact, most of that interview was edited out when it was telecast…probably because of the poor English spoken by B Jayashree. I think we all know about the widespread belief among many of us that speaking in English adds weightage to our views and opinions. Mikhail Gorbachev, the former President of Russia, spoke in his native language even in international conferences. He always carried an interpreter along to translate his words into English for the benefit of foreigners. I’ve seen this practice among many foreign dignitaries. Our Kannada celebrities could learn these things from them. Not everybody can speak English like Hindi actor Surendra Oberoi. I’m saying this because my own English has defects. At least, I am aware of those defects. Our Kannada celebrities should make efforts to brush up their English till they can speak it in a decent enough manner or carry an interpreter along with them. It is not nice to see them make a laughing stock of themselves by attempting to speak English, doing it in a pathetic manner and conveying wrong information to the public.
