Yes I probably have been noticable by my absence over the past week - l was lucky enough to have a 4 day weekend to spend some quality time with my son before the school holidays were over and then yesterday (Monday) went into Kaitaia station to do a couple of things first thing and ended up getting stuck in there until just after lunch... Am back on deck properly now and hopefully have caught up on all the jobs/messages - if you were expecting to hear from and havent then give me a bell. Most of you that travel Far North road regularly will have seen the guys laying their cables (?) - I reported 10 days or so ago that they had a trailer and water tank stolen - well they have also had a wooden reel with approximately 1000 metres of copper wire disappear and I should mention that the water tank came complete with pump - so it will stand out as being a nice piece of equipment. Please keep your eyes open for any of this gear. Also in relation to the log trucks - today I have got to the bottom of an incident that happen along the small straight by the Pukenui refuse centre last Wednesday. A fully laden truck/trailer was seen to come around the corner headed South and not be able to slow down in time for a vehicle that had just pulled out of the dump road. The truck had to cross into the oncoming lane and go around the next corner on the wrong side of the road to avoid ramming into the back of the car. Obviously this would have had disastrous consequences had there been any vehicle coming North. Today I spoken to management of the company involved - they told me the truck driver involved had already completed a company incident form (as required by them) explaining the situation and advising that the car had simply been travelling so slow he had no other choice - the only other option was to go off the road. After listening to both sides of the story I have come to the conclusion that in this case there was no fault with the truckie. So many thanks to NORTHLAND ROAD HAULAGE for having procedures in place (and followed) to be able to sort out matters like this. It serves as a reminder for all those car drivers that sometimes driving too slow for the conditions can be as dangerous as going to fast! As a lot of good truck drivers have pointed out it takes a fair distance to slow/stop the fully laden trucks so if you dawdle down the State Highway at about 50/60 kms then you could be the cause of some issues behind you! I know I know - last week too fast - this week too slow - you guys just cant win can you!! ;) The positive to come from all the chat/publicity is that I have managed to persuade the bosses further South to send me more road policing resources - they have listened to my constant bleating and from now on there should be more of a traffic policing presence on our roads. Soooo even after you have passed me on the road - lookout there just may be another! Safer driving everybody!
