Yes, I went there. I read the comments :( The more I see conversations about people in difficult situations the more I think we need to institute a compulsory community service policy like Israel has a compulsory military service policy. One that requires all citizens to spend an amount of time working to help people in need, and seeing the situations that people are in for themselves. That way we might actually have a chance that people will develop some empathy and compassion for human beings in difficult situations. If it were just as simple as making better choices, that would be great, but some people are better at making choices than others, and many people only have bad options available to chose from in the first place. Im old enough (and not even all that old) to remember a time when homelessness was unheard of in NZ. I remember going to Sydney (first time out of the country) to have my first encounter with homelessness in a big city. Something has changed in NZ since then and I dont like the direction that the change is taking us in.
