Yes, its possible to boycott Amazon and still look at from time to time as an author. And to find reader comments about Bittersweet, all written in the last few months, two years after paperback publication is cause for a happy dance. Thanks to the following: --------------------- I recommend this book to anyone. If your parents are getting older, youll find it a comfort and a guide. If you see your own older age on the horizon, its a map -- Doctor Spock, with wisdom and gentle humor, for the other end of life. --------------------------------- This is a very new field and has lots of land mines for those of us who are in this situation to navigate around. We have already made many mistakes because it is almost impossible to foretell the future. I felt lots of empathy coming from the author about the situation of others and that helped us a lot. I also felt that the ending of the book helped all of us appreciate the closure achieved by Ms. Gross and that there was hope for the rest of us going through our own personal issues with our aging parents. Thanks for writing this book! ----------------------------------- I highly recommend this book if you have aging parents. Your parents may be independent now but what do you do once they can no longer live alone? My mom is in her early 90s and has dementia. My sisters and I continuously grapple with what is best for her. I identified with many of the issues of dealing with aging parents and the sibling rivalry that seeps through. Sharing responsibilities, personality differences, lack of cooperation.... Its very trying. The book gave me insight and useful information. -------------------------------------- My daughter in law bought me the book as a gift because she knew the stress I was dealing with. I read it immediately and gave it to a sibling. This is not a how to fix it book but a book that can open your heart and mind to the reality of aging parents, unavoidable family strife, and provides resource information. The book gives you a chance to gain knowledge and be prepared for the future of helping older parents. ------------------------------- This is a well written book with much useful information. Although a sad topic, it was handled in such a way that it felt more like a novel than nonfiction. The information is important for anyone to know when caring for someone. ------------------------------ Excellently written book on a most important topic. It reads like a novel yet will have great application for all of us - who doesnt know an aging person (including ourselves)?!?! Much can be learned from the authors experience that will greatly help with our own experiences, current and future. Dont hesitate to purchase this book, you wont regret it! --------------------------- If you want to know what youre going to be up against when it comes to helping your elderly parents, this is about as truthful a book as youre going to find. It was painful to read, but helpful. For example, one day youre best friends with your siblings, the next day youre at each others throats due to not seeing eye to eye about much of anything regarding the care of your parents. Yes, the daughters often get to do a lot more than the sons, but it is usually the one who is living closest to the parent(s) who ends up on call. That makes sense. This is a well-written account of what one may go through caring for ones elderly parent who can afford to move to an assisted living community and then what happens when that doesnt work anymore. If you read it before a parent moves from his/her home, it may help more.
