Yes, male infertility can happen to professional athletes, too. In this case, a varicocele and/or abnormal testis development was responsible for poor semen quality. This story ends happily with a baby, but there are a few extremely important elements that are missing: - exploratory surgery for undescended testis does not cause varicocele, so he might have been misinformed about his condition. - hopefully he was evaluated by a urologist / male infertility specialist to see whether varicocele ligation would be a better solution. - Men with infertility should not just "bypass" their fertility through IVF. Hopefully he also received evaluation and counseling about his increased risk for other medical conditions and malignancy. - it is possible that varicocele repair and/or male hormonal medications might have spared them the painful IVF treatments, and could eliminate the need for repeating treatments if they want to get pregnant again in the future. Perhaps some of these things were presented to the couple, but they are not mentioned here. At any rate, when it comes to getting the word out, something is a lot better than nothing!
