Yes, we know it works, but a majority of the public doesnt. There is no evidence suggesting that you have to do cardio in order to improve your cardiovascular health if you are at risk. If you like to lift and do calisthenics or sling a heavy medicine ball, go ahead. What matters more is movement specificity.
