Yesterday, I attended a conference where the opinion shapers and leaders on psychotic illnesses in this country were exchanging views.A leading professor in the field who has done a lot of work on ethnicity and mental disorders presented some interesting findings from his recently published research. In the middle of answering questions, he made a statement that got me thinking. He made an assertion that the trend in which young afrocarribean immigrants in UK had relatively higher prevalence of mental disorders was not replicated among the same group of people in North America.Infact, the opposite is the case as youngsters from afrocarribean backgrounds in North America are associated with high achievement. I dont think this is a streotype. There is some truth in it in my view, but the trend is being reversed favourably for the youngsters in UK. This is one of the reasons why I mentor and am a passionate advocate for mentoring. This post is written to challenge achievers from the black immigrant communities to take the bull by the horns and leverage our status to leave a legacy of reversing these undesirable trends. Its time to look far beyond our garden fences and reach out to youngmen and women who need to be told they can achieve .Lets show them how and hold their hands all the way up the ladder. Success without a successor is utter failure. Generational living on my mind. Mentoring works! Heralding #StandingonGiants.
