Yesterday I discovered that an old friend of mine, died of Mesothelioma. This is a disease that I became concerned about, 40 years ago, and dedicated a major part of my life to advertizing the hazard and doing something about it. At times, over the years, I wondered if we were right to promote the fear of thie disease and what causes it, asbestos. Did we make lives better or worse by doing so? Well now, it is clear. We were right. This is someone I knew, someone whose face I can see without closing my eyes. And he is no longer here because of the amphibole (straight) fiber known as Amosite found in the insulation inside the boilers of ships. Until now I never had the certainty that we were right. I cannot say I feel good about being right. But there it is, an unavoidable truth, staring me in the face.
