Yesterday I was feeling kind of down on myself and lonely because I havent made a lot of time for friends or family with everything going on in my life these days. I missed the days when I was more occupied with close friends and our endeavors than the responsibilities that now seem to be orbital point of life. As I was walking my wife and Is two dogs yesterday morning thinking about these things, I noticed a stray dog on the far side of our yard watching me. When I approached her she was clearly injured and had open wounds on her head and she was struggling just to walk. I took our dogs back inside and went to get a better look at her. Cautiously, I approached the stray, who was now sitting on my front porch as though she was waiting to be let inside. A fresh perspective hit me like a freight train after examining this poor girl. If there is a hell on earth she must have just escaped. Her eyes tell the story of pains and anguish that no living creature should have to endure. Her pads were worn through and bleeding, the wounds on her head appear to be bite marks and she has clearly been a mother recently. She carries her back as though the weight of the world is weighing her to the ground she struggles so desperately to walk on. Though, despite all of this, she has hope. She displays it in her willingness to trust me and by allowing me to take care of her. Even though she watches each hand with fearful eyes of what it might do she does not meet my hand with teeth bared but with a warm tongue displaying an open heart like only a dog can do. I do not claim to know what she has been through but I do know that the worries of my life and circumstances pale in comparison to the least of hers. It is amazing how when you really look for it (and even when you dont) life gives you the tools you need to get out side of yourself and provides you with the opportunities for service, even in your own backyard! Send up a prayer for this girl and be encouraged that whatever is going on in your life is not beyond that reach of a helping hand.
