Yesterday, June 8th, was World Oceans Day (The Ocean Project)! Our oceans are not only an important natural resource for us but also habitat for thousands of animals and plant life! In the Lakes and Rivers lab on the third floor of Science North, we go collect plankton everyday from Ramsey Lake and take look at what we find! Plankton forms the base of almost every aquatic food chain on the planet whether it is freshwater or saltwater. These microscopic living plants and animals are everywhere and might I add SUPER COOL! I attached some pictures of me doing the plankton tow today and the equipment I use to do so. The last picture is what we commonly call a water flea although it is not an insect but a small crustacean called daphnia! Come ask us in the Lakes and Rivers Lab what we found everyday during the summer months!!! :) Posted by: Meghan Mitchell, Science Communicator Lakes and Rivers Lab
