Yesterday, October 28, 2013, Manilla released an article naming 5 California cities as “remaining at the bottom of the job market barrel.” These cities, Merced, Visalia, Yuba City, Stockton, and Modesto, have “11.9 percent unemployment or higher.” Fresno did not make this list even though its unemployment in August of 2013 was also 11.9%. That same month, the U.S. Department of Labor listed 13 California “Metropolitan Areas” among the bottom 28 in the U.S. (with 10% or more unemployment). But these figures do not spell gloom for other cities and Counties in California. According to the U.S. Department of Labor, in August of 2013, California enjoyed an unemployment rate of approximately 8.9%. Although this figure places California in the bottom 5 U.S. states in regards to unemployment, there are other cities and counties in California that balance out the high unemployment described above. For instance, in August of 2013, Orange County enjoyed 6.2% unemployment. This was much lower than the national average of 7.3%. The lowest California unemployment rates were in Napa at 5.8% and Santa Barbara/Santa Maria/Goleto at 6.3%. Also noteworthy is that the San Francisco Metropolitan area (6.5%) beat out the Metropolitan areas of San Diego (7.4%) and Los Angeles (9.8%) in regards to unemployment.
