Yesterday, at a press conference on Capitol Hill, I joined with some of my colleagues, Republicans and Democrats alike, in urging Speaker of the House John Boehner and Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi to support a plan to end the government shutdown. Led by Rep. Charlie Dent (R-PA), co-chair of the republican Tuesday Group, and Rep. Ron Kind (D-WI), chairman of the New Democrat Coalition, our bipartisan group asked House leadership to support a plan that would fund the government through March 31, 2014. Additionally, the plan advocates for a solution to sequestration and an end to the costly medical device tax found within the Affordable Care Act. I remain committed to ending this unnecessary shutdown as quickly as possible, and I was proud to join my colleagues in offering a bipartisan solution to our respective leadership. Getting the government up and running again should be our number one priority here in Congress, and working cooperatively, Democrats and Republicans alike, is what the American people expect. This proposal embodies just that sort of balanced solution, attracting an array of support from across the political spectrum, and I’m proud to be among those who are advancing realistic solutions rather than simply throwing partisan jabs from our respective corners.
