Yesterday, at about 6:45 and after about 5000 words, I closed the book on the first draft of Cold Roses. That draft, which I started on April 22 after a trip to the AGO earlier in the month provided me with a strange, unsettled inspiration, is about 122,000 words, which, for me, is about a perfect length for a first draft, aiming for about 100,000 after revisions. Revisions for this will come in a few months. August is going to be a lot about reviewing, revising some short stories, and a lot of lesson planning, plus a trip to St. Johns and the GTA, as well as finishing the typing of The Fallow Heart and starting revisions on that in earnest. Its time. The real question though, is, as Jed Bartlett would say, Whats next? There are three or four possible projects sitting in the back of my head - will it be one of those, or will the next thing I work on utterly surprise me, the way Cold Roses did? Time will tell.
