Yesterday at the Steve Hackett show, there was an unfortunate moment... A last-minute addition to the show was opening act Charles Kaczynski, an ex-member of the Québec group Conventum, and composer for Cirque Eloise. It had remained unannounced because the promo team wasnt made aware of this late addition. Charles is a brilliant musician, but his work is a bit eclectic and was definitely a mismatch for the main event. And yes his main piece Lumière de la Nuit is a bit long winded at 28 min. and yes it did sound a bit raw just with his violin and voice, without the whole orchestration accompanying it. But as his performance was going on, I could feel the audience getting restless and noisier and noisier, until some people in the balcony started heckling and jeering, and then the audience started applauding loudly while he was playing. Poor Charles was literally booed off stage. :( He put his heart and soul into this performance and his dream of playing the PDA was crushed. I thought it was disgraceful and extremely disrespectful from the audience. On the other hand, I totally agree that it was a mismatch, but its not a reason to destroy a musician onstage. It was the perfect combination for a trainwreck. Very sad. :(
