Yesterday evening, Tom and I were walking our 7 year old Chessy, - TopicsExpress

Yesterday evening, Tom and I were walking our 7 year old Chessy, Lucy, around our neighborhood when all of a sudden a female pit bull came running down the street and attacked her. We yelled at the person walking the dog to come grab her and he just kept slowly walking our way while he was looping the long leash he was carrying. Tom was on one side of Lucy and I was on the other, attempting to pull the pit off of Lucy. Lucy dropped to the ground at first which hopefully saved the pit from getting a good grip on the bottom of her neck. Finally the pits owner got to us and yelled at his dog, starting hitting her with the leash (the only reason I know this is because he hit me several times), and tried to pull her away. Since she did not have a collar on it was very hard to get a good grip on her. Tom was holding Lucy by the leash and grabbed the pits upper and lower jaws but wasnt able to pull them apart. I was pulling and trying to kick the pit when all of a sudden she released Lucy and went for the bottom of her neck. In that instant, I was able to pull the pit bull off of Lucy and her owner appeared to be helping me. He was not the least bit concerned or upset, refused to give us his name, and promptly took off with his dog. I tell yall this as just a reminder to everyone that loves animals, to remember to be a responsible pet owner. Any pet, given the right circumstances, might get in an attack mode at one time or another. We, as pet owners and lovers, need to remember to act responsibly and take responsibility for our pets actions. I am adding pictures of Lucy, not to gross anyone out, but to emphasize just how much damage can be done in less than 5 minutes. After over 2 hours of surgery, many staples, stitches and a drain in her neck, Lucy should recover fully. I slept downstairs with her last night and as drugged as she was, she cried and whimpered most of the night. She is getting around some today, just very slowly. Getting her to go outside was a major ordeal. Again, I just wanted to let everyone know what happened, how quickly it happened, and remind all to be a responsible pet owner.
