Yesterday, many of us took time to thank our veterans. On the way home from work, I heard a talk in NPR about Moral Injury that our veterans often experience. It’s something different than PSTD because it doesn’t take a situation of trauma to trigger onset. The commentators talked about how soldiers can experience lack of attention, anger, and anxiety because they feel guilty about leaving their families. Sometimes they feel a stronger bond with those they served with than they do their own families. Those that saw combat can experience Moral Injury because some of the things that they had to do, while they were the right thing to do, go against their moral compass. Some of they things they saw were in conflict with their moral basis. It seems to me that, equally as important as thanking our vets, we need to pray for their clarity of mind and peace of heart, to let them know we love them, forgive them for what they had to do, are here for them.
