Yesterday marks high as birthdays go: time spent well with my loving sister Doris Velasquez on Oaklands Westside, and Bob under the influence of the greatest jazz band Ive heard live. Im committed to visiting the Bay area 4 times a year to hear jazz music. I cant explain why LA doesnt have a powerful jazz community. -- The Lighthouse and Concerts By The Sea, remember? The music last night filled me- - I was drunk off of it. Moreover, the day was accented by the presence of joy - - unexplainable happiness. In the morning when well wishes from family begin to arrive, I thought for a moment with deep sadness, this would be the 1st birthday I would not receive a call from Carolyn Hardiman singing Happy Birthday to me. It was always a delight to hear her raspy voice singing totally off-key. I shedded a tear for that lost gift. But the ancestors, including Carolyn now, rained down the most powerful love yesterday and I radiated with happiness until my eyes closed for sleep.
