Yesterday, my girlfriend surprised me with an amazing gift -- Mars Attacks!: The Art Of The Movie. Its a paperback I owned when I was in high school. She heard me mention it while we were flipping through her copy of the book about the making of Jurassic Park, and I suppose she realized that her childhood connection to that film was matched by my youthful obsession with Mars Attacks! I saw it seven times in the theater, forcing all of my friends to witness what I still insist is a brilliant film. I even tried to ask someone out on a date to the movie, leaving her one of those awkward, long phone messages weve all experienced, or have at least seen lampooned. The first time I came across the book was when it was presented to me as a gift from the cast of The Bald Soprano, the Ionesco play I directed as a high school project. It was extremely touching then, as it was when Katie handed it to me last night. What a thrill to be in a relationship with someone so thoughtful and lovely, and who probably would have returned my call to go see a dumb movie back in the day.
