Yesterday my good friend Steven Kushner said you know Melanie, receiving an award from a university is no small recognition. It is a big deal and you should enjoy it. Im so glad he shared those words with me as it helped me to be very present for this wonderful experience. Today- March 21-I received Kean Universitys Outstanding Human Rights Community Activist Award. The award was given to me along with the distinguished speakers: Dr. Kenneth Rutherford , director of the Center for International Stabilization and Recovery, Melissa Stockwell, Wounded Warriors Project and Jaqueline Murrlatete, an award winning human rights activist and survivor of the Rewanda genocide, two students and Debra Maller a teacher from Rahway High School. My dear colleague Henry Kaplowitz, founder and director of Keans Human Rights Institute, is retiring and not only received an award for his distinguished career but also had an award created in his honor. I first met Hank when we worked closely on the NJ Coalition to end the Crisis in Darfur with co-conveners Joyce Ellen Reilly and Janet Q. Nelson, both who attended today. It was special to have my CEO Max Kleinman and CRC Chair Gordon Haas there along with other colleagues
