Yesterday on the plane we stopped in LaPaz, Bolivia for about an hour...as soon as the plane depressurized, a lady across the isle from me became unresponsive, very pale, and had a thready pulse. Her oxygen levels were in the 81-84% range (normal, 92 or above) ..... responded immediately to oxygen and woke up! Thankfully she is with a team that is going to do medical work in Santa Cruz, which is at a much lower elevation. (However the medical team with her did not seem to recognize or respond to her problem....only her non-medical seatmate!). Thankful that she was close by to me and quickly responded to oxygen. Different people respond to the sudden altitude elevation in different ways. And yes, I had a finger pulse oximeter and stethescope in my carryon because of the babies that I will transport to Toronto!
