Yesterday our Director Greg went along to St Marys College in Hobart to attend a Sustainability Day that had been organised. This wonderful idea was put together by one of the teachers, Tanaz (or miss J as the kids affectionately call her!) who is also one of our wildlife rescue volunteers. What a fantastic effort from the school to get behind this great idea to promote sustainability to all their students. Greg was very impressed!! To start the day there was an opening assembly with three speakers - the head of Catholic Schools Sustainability, Tino Carnevale from Gardening Australia and Greg. There was also St Marys very own environmental prefect Maddie who was the MC for the day and did a great job (how cool is it that a school has an environmental prefect?!). After the assembly there was a fashion parade where students used recycled materials to make all sorts of incredible costumes! Gregs favourite outfit was the battery hen. But the student dressed in tea bags also caught his eye. This outfit was measuring food miles to show how far food travels around the world and the most sustainable places to buy food from. At lunch time there were a series of environmental stalls outside such as a worm farm starter kits plastic murals using bottle caps, the I make a pledge selfie stand and then our wonderful friend Emma from Brightside Farm Sanctuary came along with piglets, goats, dogs and lambs to win over the students hearts and promote awareness about factory farming. The last part of the day was filled with a number of sustainability seminars where students could listen to different speakers about an array of sustainabilty topics. Greg spoke about small changes that people can make to be more sustainable and how to be a leader with sustainability. Check out the photos below from the day and if you have any involvement with a school please encourage them to do something similar to this awesome initiative like St Marys have done!! :)
