Yesterday the Ozona stockman posted a survey type post on the Stockman FB page..At first I though I probably shouldnt comment, as some would assume that I am biased. However, the more i thought about it, the more i felt the need to write something, so here goes.. I want to say that I think the community of Ozona should have a nice, modern medical facility, just as our neighboring counties have.. There are numerous reasons, one of the most important being the ability to bring specialists in on a routine basis each month, such as a urologist, cardiologist, orthopedic, etc.. This would especially help our elderly members of the community. Also, rural communities no longer appeal to doctors. Rural areas are typically isolated from specialists, and doctors must be a jack of all trades in routine patient and urgent care. They also are responsible for endless hours of call, whereas in the city the holding call is minimum due to rotation with other doctors. . When trying to recruit a new physician in the future, they are going to look at specifically 3 things. The location, the school system, and the facility. Although we all love our town, if we were looking at those things through a prospective doctors eyes right now- What conclusion would WE come to?? But the biggest reason- our little community DESERVES it!! With the exception of our schools,and to the best of my knowledge- the clinic is the only county owned building that is used by approximately 85-90% of its citizens- with 30 - 50 patients a day coming through the doors. And Although without a doubt a jail is needed and I certainly agree with that- thank goodness it does not see the volume of Ozona citizens that our clinic does! And lastly, I would like to add that a new building is not for Dr. Sims and the staff. We as a staff fully understand and have discussed that we have all made our nest in that old building, and that moving from it would be a very difficult task. But we recognize the serious need for a modern facility, in order to bring convenience of care to our community, and to attract medical staff in the future. We are currently blessed with an abundance of oil field money.. I feel that the time is right for the county to venture into adding some assets - whether it be a new Jail, new fire department, new school or other facility to this great community, and not wait until the oilfield business begins to move elsewhere...
