Yesterday was a funny and really fun day. It all started because some friends of mine did a really nice thing for my kids and let them ride on the Bentonville Christmas Parade Float that they had built. It was fun because my sons had a friend sleep over the night before so really no sleep was enjoyed by any of the kids in the house. They were up late moving around till who knows when, and when I was up at 5am I heard them moving around like they had been up for a bit. In typical childhood fashion even with no sleep, they were nothing but a ball of energy and it was great to see. So first thing when my wife got up, we did the hustle and bustle of getting them out of their pjs that they wore to bed and put them in presentable pjs for the parade. I know, I dont get it either, but I guess they looked different to my wife and really I wasnt going to argue that early in the morning. In typical fashion my wife and I also go into the holiday spirit. I put on my Santa hat that I like to wear and my wife donned her christmas tree hat. We both decked ourselves out in red and green and off we went to watch our kids in the parade. After dropping our boys off at the float we made our way downtown and were early enough to get a really great spot right on the square. That is when something really funny happened. A reporter for Channel 5 News came up to us and asked my wife if they could interview us for the news regarding the parade. My wife thinking it was a newspaper interview said sure no problem. Then I about fell out of my shoes laughing because as soon as the reporter got a yes, out came a microphone from behind her back and she called over her cameraman to set up for the interview. I about died laughing because my wife has the worst stage fright in front of a camera you have ever seen. I mean she literally loses all train of though as soon as a camera light goes on, and nothing comes out of her mouth. It has always be hilarious to me because I was such a big talker, so I was always just expected to sweep in, say the right thing and make it happen. This time however, I caught the look of fright in her eyes as she realized I might not be able to do that, and this one might be all up to her. It was was funny, but honestly I think it helped her because she was forced to answer some of the questions. I also dont think the reporter knew when she talked to us that I might have an issue talking. In the end however I surprised even myself because when push came to shove I was able to talk and I guess I sounded semi coherent in my elocution because my portion of the interview ended up on 5 News at 6pm. It was interesting for me to hear my own voice and pick out where I still need work, but it felt amazing that my voice and what I said would still be clear enough that it could be used for a TV interview. We finished the day with what is turning into a family holiday tradition of checking out a version of the Nutcracker. This one happened to have one of our very close and very talented friends in it. Along with her daughter and a a bunch of other people we happened to know from our community. That just made it so much better to watch because we all felt a thrill from seeing faces that we knew up on stage and that sense of happiness you get from seeing people you care about succeed in doing something they love. Overall yesterday while being tiring was just a great day. Both my wife and I overcame some fears that we had and the whole family got to enjoy a day making more memories. You just cant beat a day like that. I even managed to find a copy of the news piece on the internet and I posted it below. May you all have as great of a Sunday as I am having.
