Yesterday was another day; another doctor - this time my neurologist dealing with the extreme headaches [and, on rare occasions, stroke-like symptoms] on the right side of my head [mostly around my ear]. Over the last six months Ive had so many medical tests, at hospitals and specialists clinics, with state-of-the-art equipment. It was so interesting yesterday that one of the most telling tests was done with an ordinary safety pin. When the neurologist gently poked my left ear and left side of my head I could immediately feel the very sharp point of the pin. On my right ear, and the right side of my head the pin felt like a very blunt object. The diagnosis, after a number of tests, is that I seem to have a combination of trigeminal neuralgia and migraines. He suspects the fast-onset, incredibly painful 20-30 minute headaches are TN; and the other issues - sometimes lasting up to 1.5 days - are migraines. If I was not a cardiac patient the course of action could be daily medications to prevent the headaches. I appreciate the fact that the neurologists otherwise preferred treatment is acupuncture. We are also to discuss some potential medications - and the possible side effects - with my cardiologist when we see her tomorrow. And so it goes...
