Yesterday was one of the most incredible news days of my life. It started with a father and son being pulled from the rip currents off Ocean Beach. A surfer grabbed the son, firefighters got the father. Theyre both in critical condition. For the next several hours, we were on standby as the beach patrol kept their eye on surfers and swimmers who braved the mountainous waves because the experience is addicting. Then, after dark, around 7:30 p.m. a surfer ran over to my photographer asking to borrow his phone. His 24-year-old buddy never made it back meaning he was somewhere out in the black waves. We called the US Coast Guard who deployed a helicopter and boats with infrared technology. Then, just before 9:00 p.m. the incredible news. The surfer was found clinging to some rocks. The US Coast Guard shot flares to light up the night sky as an incredibly brave team risked their lives to pluck the surfer to safety. Hes bruised, hypothermic...but alive.
