Yesterday, we posted the first 3 chapters, today we bring you the next installment from the 13 short chapter story... Nowhere to Turn, The Henderson Files: Book One Chapter 4: “So what’s up? What’s going on?” Leah questions when she and Angel are walking home from school. “My mom left again.” “Are you serious? That’s messed up. She thinks she just can keep leaving you, Jada, and Ty? That ain’t right.” “Yeah, I know. This time she left a note.” “What’d it say?” “Goodbye. I think she’s gone for good this time. I don’t know what I’m going to do. Jada ain’t been talking and she’s gone all the time. Andre keeps asking me questions. Then Ty been all fussy and keep going in my mom’s room, like he’s looking for her. Plus, I’ve been spending all my emergency money on diapers for Ty and food for all of us. I don’t know when the rent is due or all the other bills. I’m almost out of money. There’s no way I can pay them. I don’t know what to do. I feel like everything’s just in my hands. What if Andre’s school needs to see my mom or talk to her? What if our school needs to talk to my mom about me or Jada?” Angel says trying not to cry. “I don’t know girl, but I’m gonna think of something. How about you bring Ty over tomorrow and I’ll watch him for a while, ok? But don’t cry. Somehow it’s all gonna be alright. I’m here for you and I’ll do as much as I can to help.” “If only my dad were here,” Angel mumbles while tears run down her face. Chapter 5: “You know we running out of food. What we supposed to eat?” Jada asks with an attitude as soon as Angel walks through the door. Angel checks out the food situation. “We still got some chicken in the freezer. We got two boxes of mac and cheese too. Um, how about I get the chicken out and let it thaw in some warm water. Then you could boil some water and cook the mac and cheese.” Jada opens the fridge. “One problem with that, we out of milk.” “Shhh, um…well. We’ll just cook the noodles then.” “What we gonna put on them?” “Nothing.” “What you mean nothing? You want us all just to eat plain noodles?” “Yes Jada,” Angel raises her voice. “I don’t have any money to spare to get more food. So you just gonna have to be grateful that we got food. I’m doing the best I can, alright? I’m just trying to keep us all together. So, please Jada just help me get dinner ready.” “Alright, I’m helping.” Andre walks in. “Why y’all yelling?” “We ain’t yelling. We just working on dinner,” Jada says. Angel smiles sadly, proud of her sister. “Well, I can help,” Andre salutes, “Master chef at your service.” “Okay master chef. How ‘bout you go play with Ty. Dinner be ready soon.” Chapter 6: “I’m here to pick up Andre Henderson,” Angel tells the secretary in Andre’s school. “And you are?” “I’m his sister, Angel Henderson. I’m on the list to pick him up.” “I see. Hold on a moment.” Angel sits down bouncing Ty on her leg impatiently. “Ms. Henderson,” a voice calls. Angel’s heart starts beating, too fast. Bum..Bum..Bum..Bum..Bum. “Ms. Henderson?” It’s Andre’s teacher. “Oh yes, here I am.” Andre comes running up to Angel. “Where you been sis? You’re late.” “I’m sorry Andre I got held up with Ty and…” “Excuse me,” Andre’s teacher clears her throat. Angel glances at the teacher. “Yes, thank you for bringing Andre to me and waiting. I’m sorry it won’t happen again.” “Yes, well this has happened before and although I understand people being a few minutes late, I have other things I have to do. So, either you need to get here by 3:15 to pick him up or your mother needs to be here herself to get him. Also, please remind Ms. Henderson that parent-teacher conferences are next week on Wednesday. Your mother scheduled a meeting at 5pm, so please remind her to show up on time. Have her call here if she has any questions for me.” Angel tries to hide the flash of panic in her eyes, swallows and says with a fake smile plastered on her face, “I’ll be on time to get Andre from now on I promise. And I will be sure to remind my mom about the conference. But we all need to get home.” “Alright. You all have a good day. I’ll see you in class tomorrow, Andre.” “See ya.”Andre mumbles. As Andre and Angel walk off the teacher shakes her head. “I don’t see why I even bother with parent’s like Andre’s. They’ll never show up anyway.” (To be continued tomorrow) -Lil Deontamommy, Champaign, Illinois
