Yesterday we said our farewell to our friends who thrived (not only survived) during potentially the harshest Manitoba winter in 80 years in a teepee...Bill Miles and Ciara Latendresse from Ontario. Last night, a mutual friend of ours was kind enough to have a few of us over for a farewell dinner/social party, of which the social gathering part was a complete surprise to Bill and Ciara. It was a great time! The goodbye part is only temporary of course, as well be seeing them again perhaps later in the year. The adventurous couple begins their westward journey to British Columbia, on foot with their essential possessions and two dogs, this week. It seems like yesterday (its really been half a year) since we first welcomed them into Portage la Prairie and allowed them to use our yard and house while they camped in our yard. Special thanks to Jake & Carol Gerbrand, Ron Smoke and his daughter Ramona, René, Jeremy, my cousins Sean, Dawn, Ryan, and Brett, Linda Omichinski, et al. et al. for also being so generous, accommodating, and a genuine friend to them in any way they could, and becoming almost like their Manitoba family. We certainly learned lots from this extraordinary couple who became community icons and stars on national television, on a number of topics from sustainable living to community giving, and we also thank them for having touched us and this community with their amicability, compassion, and generosity for others! What an experience getting to know them and spending time with them. Hope they learned a lot as well! Bon voyage to our friends Bill and Ciara...we wish you all the best on the next leg of your journey! And until we meet again, keep in touch and have a blast entering the next chapter of your lives!
